FAQs for Year 6 Parents/Carers
There is a transition week (week commencing 1st July) for students from Year 6 who have been allocated a place at the Academy in September 2019. Students will spend the week getting to know their way around the building, meeting staff, and attend sample lessons. Letters with full details will be sent to parents in June 2019.
There will be a Year 6 Parents’ Induction Evening on Wednesday, 19th June at 6.30 p.m. at the Academy. This is an information evening for parents only.
On that evening, Mr D Butler, Principal, will share with parents and carers useful information about your child joining the school. Other key members of staff will also be available to answer any questions you may have and you will have an opportunity to meet your child’s College Leader and the Head of Achievement Support (SENCO) Mrs Avery-Earl.
Our transition team works closely with your child’s primary schools in preparation for their move from primary to secondary school. Mrs J Butler, DSL and College Leader, will visit Year 6 students in their schools to gather information and to get to know the students.
Mrs Avery-Earl, our SENCO, will liaise with your child’s current school to ensure that we have all the information needed for a smooth transition. She will meet the students and their teachers to ensure that students are provided with the right level of support when they attend the Academy. She will also be available at the Year 6 Parents’ Induction Evening on Wednesday, 19th June.
You will receive an induction pack in June which includes all the information we need (i.e. current address, contact details and medical notes etc, login details for the parent portal and parent pay) before your child starts at the Academy, as well as useful information for you. It will give you details about your child’s school day, equipment requirements, uniform and expectations and standards.
You will be asked to complete a form in your induction pack which will provide us with the information we need. A full time First Aider is based in Reception where she is able to store and administer medication and she is available throughout the site during the school day.

Due to high levels of ordering in the summer holidays, you are advised to order your uniform as soon as possible.
On arrival your child will be met in Reception and taken to the Lecture Theatre. There our new Year 7 students will be introduced to their tutor and their tutor group. The day will start with an assembly led by the Principal who will welcome them to the Academy. The children will then spend time with their tutor group, receive their timetables and be given planners. They will complete activities to get to know their classmates and will have their thumb print scanned so they can access the photocopiers and pay for meals in the restaurant.
The Academy has a restaurant which is open from 8.00am until 3.00 p.m. Lunch for Year 7s is between 1.15 pm and 1.55pm. A range of sandwiches, wraps, fruit, salads, snacks (not including sweets) as well as a choice of hot meals is available. Payment can be made via ParentPay. Some students bring packed lunches.
