Sixth Form Bursary

The Sixth Form Bursary is a financial assistance set-up by the Government, whereby a student with contextual factors is allocated a financial budget that they can utilise in order to support their ability to study and progress within Sixth Form. Any student who was eligible for free school meals in Year 11 and whose circumstances have remained unchanged should see Mrs Farley for further details.

All students being awarded a bursary are required for their parent/carer to apply for this at the beginning of the Academic year and confidentially provide evidence to support the claims of their status.

The ESFA has set guidelines and encourages institutions to pay bursaries in-kind rather than cash deposited into accounts. This helps ensure that the bursary is spent for the reasons it was awarded. Furthermore, it is to be noted that we strongly advise that no purchase be made before a bursary request form is completed, which can be obtained from Mrs McStay who is based in the Sixth Form Centre and authorisation is given by the Head of Sixth Form, Kat Farley.

The bursary awarded can be used for all educational purchases of items that are required to aid completion of your chosen course:

  • Stationery
  • Textbooks
  • Travel – i.e. bus pass
  • Specialist equipment to support
  • Assistance with purchase of your sixth form attire in line with our dress code policy
  • Bag/rucksack for school
  • Assistance with additional course costs such as trips, residential visits and music lessons

Stationary equipment are devices such as laptops or printers, however, upon completion of your course, these items must be returned to the Trust. According to the ESFA guidelines, if an institution purchases equipment that is necessary for the student to complete their study programme, they can purchase this with bursary funds and we are obligated to inform the student that they must maintain this item and return it once they have completed their study programme, and as such a record of these item will remain on their file.

Upon Submitting the form, the claim will need to be authorised before we can accept any receipts/evidence, therefore, please only provide this once approval is complete for which you will be notified of.

Rowlands Trust Scholarship

Any student completing Year 13, who has chosen to progress on to University is eligible to apply for a Rowlands Trust Scholarship.

The Rowlands Trust has a long history at the Academy, of financially supporting our students and permits us to support a number of selected students who have finished their course and are about to start university, with a grant of £1000 per student, per year, for a period of three years.

Were you to be awarded a Rowlands Trust Scholarship this payment would be made directly to you in order to support you in your important next steps on to your respective undergraduate degree. No repayment would be required, however, we would be required to feedback to The Rowlands Trust on an annual basis in order to feedback as to how you are progressing and obtain a brief report from an academic member of university staff. In addition, we would also look to gain your support in coming in to speak to our younger students at a convenient point to talk to them about your experiences in moving on to university.

Year 13 students are provided with details of how they can apply for a Rowland’s Trust Scholarship in their final year of their Level 3 qualifications.
