Work Experience
Work experience is a key aspect of sixth form as it allows students to trial career ideas before pursuing them. It allows students to improve their skills and competencies in several ways for later life as well. In addition to this, several university courses and employers expect students to have completed work experience as a requirement of being accepted.
Whilst with us, students will need to complete some form of work experience which can be any of the following:
- Work shadowing someone at work to see “what their job is like?”
- Visiting different workplaces?
- Going to work with a parent or carer
- Doing 1 or 2-week work placement during half term 6?
- Go into a workplace for one day a week over a period?
- Completing virtual work experience?
- Insight events, days or weeks?
- Completing voluntary work
Students will need to plan to do this for periods throughout the year. This must not interfere with their timetabled commitments and can take place during academy hours during non-contact time. If this is the case, it needs to be agreed with the sixth form team (written confirmation of placement is required). Once this has taken place it can be added to your timetable. Work experience cannot be paid and must be related to their future pathways or present study.
All students are encouraged to complete an extended work experience placement at the end of the summer term, but students are also encouraged to commit to long term placements of a day or half day a week. These cannot interfere with timetabled lessons, but Mrs Farley is happy to discuss fitting worthwhile placements in with a student’s timetable.
Besides the support you will get from your tutors, Mrs McStay will be able to support you with arranging work experience. You are to log any work experience on Unifrog.
Virtual Work Experience
As physical work experience placements were unable to take place during COVID, many career areas are still offering virtual work experience. If your child is interested in a career in veterinary or medicine, please take the time to consider these placements as some university courses require the applicant to have a certain amount of logged work experience hours.

University
University websites and prospectuses are a good place to start finding out more, but by far the best way to get a feel for different universities is to visit as many as possible. Look out for open days, campus tours, taster sessions and master classes. This will give you a taste of what the university is really like, and current students will often be on hand to answer your questions. Using social media can also be a good way to connect with universities and their students. Information on University open days can be following the link Opendays.com.
