Curriculum Intent

In Health and Social Care we inspire students to develop skills and qualities required to influence care and empower students through encouraging independence and creativity.

Knowledge

Health & Social Care focuses on the knowledge and skills required to work in these sectors. This involves knowing how people develop physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially throughout their life, as well as the values and principles that underpin professional practice such the 6Cs: care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment. Issues such as safeguarding are considered as are the laws, policies and procedures that are put in place to protect both professionals and the individuals being cared for.

Purpose

There is a key focus on how knowledge can be applied to real life. Students are required to analyse what may be the best way to provide care for a person, taking into account their needs, wishes and circumstances and whether or not the best care is feasible or practical in terms of resources available. It also requires students to think about different people’s life experiences and to be able to empathise i.e.to put themselves in someone else’s shoes, so as to understand their point of view.

Health & Social Care is about developing students who care. It is about building respect and tolerance for another person’s uniqueness, and an understanding that some people in society are more vulnerable and require compassion and support. It is also about betterment and how they may improve providing care to make life better for others.

Proactivity

Curiosity – In KS4 students will carry out independent, primary research to show an understanding of how their chosen client has grown and developed physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. They will also look into some life factors that may have had an impact on this. Finally, they will investigate local health and social care providers to assess how they can assist an individual.

In KS5 students will research some of the theories behind how people grow and develop and the laws and policies that are put in place to protect them.

Commitment – It is vital that students develop their sense of confidence, perseverance and self-discipline within the subject. This will prepare them to work with others to become confident, conscientious and resilient carers who will take other peoples needs into account when they go about their work.

Courage – In KS4 students will feel empowered to perform a role play in front of their teachers and peers to demonstrate the care values. In KS5 they will build on the feedback from this experience when they visit H&SC providers for work experience.
